Spatial Communication

The new five-storey building of the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule Düsseldorf houses the university library, seminar rooms, administrative offices and over 50 heavily frequented practice rooms for students.

Two musical annotation symbols were chosen as minimalist design elements to indicate direction:

The crescendo (or decrescendo) arrow for left and right. It indicates the dynamics (volume change) in musical notation. The crescendo (or decrescendo) arrows extend—analogous to the musical notation—horizontally over the name of the room whose direction is shown.

If the route is straight ahead, there is a markato sign placed above the name of the room.

This is also derived from musical notation —
it signifies a note played with more emphasis.
